Nine Days' Notice: Cortes-Acosta and Walker Headline a Card That Wasn't Supposed to Exist

“God had different plans than me. God has better plans for me.”

— Johnny Walker

UFC Vegas 124 — also billed as UFC Fight Night 293 — closes out Saturday night at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas with a heavyweight main event that was booked nine days ago, and a co-main event with a title shot hanging over it. Fourteen bouts, all made official at Friday's weigh-ins, stream live on Paramount+.

Nine days ago, this card belonged to somebody else. Welterweights Gabriel Bonfim and Sean Brady were set to headline UFC Vegas 124, until Brady withdrew on October 29 with a staph infection in his knee. The bout was cancelled outright — Bonfim got no replacement and no fight. The UFC needed a new main event, and matchmaker Mick Maynard's message landed with Johnny Walker after training that same Thursday.

Walker's plan for heavyweight could not have been further from a short-notice headliner. Five weeks ago, on October 3, he made his debut in the division and knocked out Mick Parkin with a knee at 3:35 of the first round. The idea, he said at media day this week, was patience: "I was thinking to take small steps and go slow in the division. See how I feel at heavyweight. That was my plan." Then the call came. "God had different plans than me," Walker said. "God has better plans for me." He accepted immediately, and his reasoning to talkSPORT was pure Walker: "The meat fell on the plate of the most carnivore guy and I wanna eat it."

What he has bitten into is the hardest test available on nine days' preparation. Waldo Cortes-Acosta, the UFC's No. 6-ranked heavyweight, has never been finished and never been knocked down in 21 professional fights. The 35-year-old Dominican, a former LFA champion, ripped off three straight knockouts — Ante Delija, Shamil Gaziev and Derrick Lewis — before running into the top of the division and dropping unanimous decisions to Alexander Volkov in May and Curtis Blaydes in September. This is his first UFC main event, and he does not intend to waste it on a man who was a light heavyweight last month.

The scales told their own story on Friday. Cortes-Acosta weighed 262 pounds; Walker, 239. A 23-pound gap, and every one of those pounds sits behind Cortes-Acosta's pressure boxing. Walker's counters are real enough — 18 of his 23 career wins have come by knockout — and at 34, with 17 UFC appearances behind him, he is not treating the occasion as anything special. "I'm a veteran now, I'm 34 years old, with a lot of experience," he told talkSPORT. "For me, it's just another day of my life. It's a normal day for me, so… Let's go, man. Why not?" Whether his chin holds up at heavyweight for five rounds against a man who has never been dropped is the question the whole night now turns on.

The co-main event carries the highest stakes on the card. Tatiana Suarez, ranked No. 2 at strawweight, meets No. 3 Virna Jandiroba, and both are fighting to make their case for a shot at champion Mackenzie Dern. Each has already stood in a title fight and come away empty: Suarez lost her unbeaten record to Zhang Weili at UFC 312 in February 2025, and Jandiroba fell to Dern in the vacant-title fight at UFC 321 last October. This matchup has been scheduled twice before — in August 2023, when a Jandiroba knee injury intervened, and at UFC 310 in December 2024 — and fallen through both times. Third time around, both women made it to the scale: Suarez at 115.5 pounds, Jandiroba at the 116 limit.

Suarez has rebuilt with two straight wins, a decision over Amanda Lemos and a second-round rear-naked choke of Loopy Godinez in April. Jandiroba, who owns 14 submission wins, beat Tabatha Ricci on the cards in April. It is the division's best wrestler against its most dangerous guard, and the winner leaves the APEX first in line.

The rest of the main card mixes the proven and the promising: veteran Davey Grant (18-8) against rising bantamweight Elijah Smith (10-1); light heavyweights Billy Elekana and Lucas Fernando; Priscila Cachoeira against Nina Milošević at bantamweight; and flyweights Mitch Raposo and Marcos Degli opening the main card. On the prelims, keep an eye on Austin Bashi vs Carlos Calderon — Calderon, a promotional newcomer, makes his UFC debut on four days' notice after Lucas Brennan tore his ACL.

All 28 fighters made weight on Friday. No misses, no fines, no catchweights. The prelims begin at 2 p.m. PT, the main card at 5 p.m. PT, and the entire event streams live on Paramount+.
