Brady out, heavyweights in: Walker vs Cortes-Acosta reportedly headlines UFC Vegas 124

“By 9 o'clock at night, I couldn't walk”

— Sean Brady

UFC Vegas 124 has a new main event eight days out — and it is a different weight class entirely.

Sean Brady is out of the Nov. 7 headliner against Gabriel Bonfim at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas, and Bonfim is off the card altogether. In their place, Johnny Walker vs Waldo Cortes-Acosta is reportedly set to headline as a five-round heavyweight bout, first reported by Brazilian journalist Laerte Viana on Thursday. The UFC has not announced the fight, so this is reported, not confirmed — but the rest of the shake-up is already on the record.

Brady explained the withdrawal himself on The BradyBags Show, and the story is as blunt as it is bad luck. A small cut on his knee turned into a staph infection during fight camp. He trained on a Tuesday morning feeling fine, then felt the knee swell after a bike session that night.

"By 9 o'clock at night, I couldn't walk," Brady said.

He was in hospital by 6 a.m. the next morning and stayed three days while doctors waited for the bacteria culture to confirm staph, draining the knee daily. The infection, he said, is still active. He cannot train, and cutting weight is out of the question.

"There's just no way around it," Brady said.

Brady, 19-2 and coming off a win over Joaquin Buckley, pushed to stay on a 2026 card. He asked about Dec. 12 — full. Dec. 5 in Saudi Arabia — full. Nov. 21 in Qatar — full. There is no Nov. 28 card because of Thanksgiving. So he is targeting the Jan. 16 card in Dallas, against Bonfim or a new opponent. It is the same knee he hurt before his TKO loss to Michael Morales last November.

Bonfim, 20-1 on a five-fight winning run, confirmed his own removal on Instagram, and he did not hide the frustration.

"As some of you already know, my fight was canceled. Sean Brady is out of the fight. He says he got injured. A week before the fight, he tells us he got injured. You can't really understand it, right? But God knows all things and we keep moving forward. And on Nov. 7th I won't be fighting, unfortunately."

The promotion initially sought a replacement for Bonfim, per Sherdog's report. None was found in time, so the card gets a new headliner instead of a patched-up old one.

Walker, 23-10 with one no contest, is the short-notice answer. He moved up to heavyweight after a split-decision loss to Dominick Reyes at UFC 327 in April, then knocked out Mick Parkin in the first round of his divisional debut at UFC 332 on Oct. 3. Five weeks later, he would be headlining again.

Cortes-Acosta, 17-4, arrives needing a win after back-to-back decision losses to Curtis Blaydes and Alexander Volkov. A victory over a name like Walker would put his heavyweight run back on track; a loss would make it three straight.

The reported co-main event stays intact: Tatiana Suarez vs Virna Jandiroba in a women's strawweight bout between top contenders.

What is confirmed: Brady is out with a staph infection, Bonfim is off the card, and Brady wants January. What is reported: Walker vs Cortes-Acosta headlines Nov. 7. Until the UFC announces it, that last part stays in the reported column — but the card, one week from Saturday, already looks nothing like it did a week ago.
