Nolan walks into his first UFC main event carrying a promise he kept

“Hey, I'm fighting on Contender Series in two weeks and I'm gonna knock this dude out with one of your techniques.”

— Tom Nolan

In 2023, Tom Nolan told Cory Sandhagen he would knock out his Contender Series opponent with a technique from Sandhagen's online course — then he did it. Tomorrow the 11-1 Australian headlines UFC Vegas 123 against Renato Moicano.

Tom Nolan walks into his first UFC main event tomorrow night carrying a receipt from three years ago: a promise he made, and kept, before he ever had a UFC contract.

The promise went to Cory Sandhagen. Before his Dana White's Contender Series bout in 2023, Nolan was studying Sandhagen's online course, and he messaged the bantamweight contender with a pledge.

"I messaged Cory before my Contender Series knockout," Nolan said in a prefight interview this week. "I was studying his online course. I messaged him, I said, 'Hey, I'm fighting on Contender Series in two weeks and I'm gonna knock this dude out with one of your techniques.' And I actually used the dart shot that he teaches."

The dude was Bogdan Grad. Nolan knocked him out in the first round on August 8, 2023, and walked out with a UFC contract. The technique he had promised to use was the one he used.

What followed was not a straight line. Nolan lost his UFC debut to Nikolas Motta in January 2024, then won five straight, most recently a unanimous decision over Fares Ziam in June. Now 11-1, the 26-year-old Australian headlines UFC Vegas 123 at the Meta Apex on Saturday, his first five-round fight.

The opponent is the other end of the career arc. Renato Moicano, 21-7-1, is 37 and coming off a second-round rear-naked choke of Chris Duncan in April. He is the veteran test for a headliner who got here by studying someone else's course and then proving the lesson in public.

Both men made weight on Friday — Moicano 156 pounds, Nolan 155.5 — so the main event is official. One card note from the scales: Francis Marshall missed weight for his featherweight bout with Dakota Hope, coming in at 148 pounds against the 146-pound limit, and forfeits 20 percent of his purse. The bout stays on the card, and every other fighter made weight.

Nolan's story tomorrow is not about a promise anymore. It is about what happens when the student stops studying and starts headlining — against a man who has seen every version of this story before.
