Volkov Did Everything But Get An Answer

“What should I do to get a title shot? Answer me, please.”

— Alexander Volkov

Alexander Volkov beat Rizvan Kuniev, asked Dana White for a title shot for the second time in a week, and got a shrug instead of a date.

Alexander Volkov did everything a contender is supposed to do. He won, he asked, and he asked again. He still does not have an answer.

The Question, Asked Twice

Volkov beat Rizvan Kuniev by unanimous decision at UFC 333 on Saturday, October 24, at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Then he took the microphone in the octagon and asked the question he had already asked two days earlier.

"I have a question for Dana White," Volkov said. "What should I do to get a title shot? Answer me, please."

White's answer, at the post-fight press conference, was not a date, not a name, and not a promise.

"Yeah, look, he had a good performance tonight," White said. "We'll see. We'll see what happens next."

Two Answers In One Week

That is the second answer Volkov got in one week, and the two do not match.

Before the fight, White told Main Event that Volkov was already in the title picture. "He's in (the mix)," White said. "It's not like he has to do anything to come close to the title shot. He's in it right now, everything you said is dead on, and he'll get his shot."

"Sometimes people get in these weird positions where they feel like they're in no man's land, but it's just a timing issue," White added.

After the fight, the timing issue was still the whole answer. "We'll see" is what a contender hears when the queue in front of him is already full.

Thursday: The Mic Grab

Volkov started the week by walking up to a microphone he was not invited to use.

On Thursday, at the UFC 333 pre-fight press conference, Volkov took a fan microphone from the crowd and asked White directly what he has to do to earn a title shot. White, in the moment, did not play it as a contender making his case.

After the fight, White insisted he had known exactly who was holding the microphone all along. He said he thought Volkov was setting up a joke.

"Yeah, of course I knew it was him," White said. "I thought it was like a schtick he was doing, and I was waiting for the punchline, and it never came."

Whether White knew or not, the moment landed the same way: the heavyweight division's most patient contender had to grab a fan's microphone to be heard.

Saturday: The Win Itself

The win itself was not in doubt. Volkov beat Kuniev by unanimous decision, 29-28, 30-27, 30-27, over three rounds.

It was Volkov's third straight win, and his seventh in his last eight fights. His only loss since 2022 was the hugely controversial decision defeat to Ciryl Gane at UFC 310 in December 2024, a fight many observers scored for Volkov.

That is the record of a man who should not need to ask twice. Volkov controlled the fight from distance, chopped at Kuniev's legs all night, and never let the bout slip into the kind of chaos that costs contenders their place in line.

He did the job, then he asked the question again, in the cage, on the microphone that was actually his.

The Cost: Kuniev's Night In Hospital

Kuniev paid for those leg kicks after the fight ended.

Kuniev was the only fighter from UFC 333 transported to a local hospital, for precautionary X-rays on his leg, after absorbing Volkov's kicks through all three rounds. ESPN stats, as reported after the event, credited Volkov with 14 landed leg kicks.

The results of Kuniev's scans had not been publicly disclosed at the time of reporting. That part of the story is still open, and nothing about an injury beyond the precautionary X-rays is claimed here.

Kuniev entered the fight on a two-fight winning streak, with wins over Tyrell Fortune and Jailton Almeida, and the loss snapped that run. He is now 2-2 inside the octagon, and his record stands at 14-4-1.

The Queue Ahead Of Him

Here is why "we'll see" is not just a brush-off. The heavyweight queue ahead of Volkov is already booked solid.

Champion Ciryl Gane defends the heavyweight title against Josh Hokit at UFC 334 on November 14 at Madison Square Garden in New York. That is the next title fight, and Volkov is not in it.

Behind The Title Fight

Then, at UFC 335 on December 12 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Alex Pereira faces Sergei Pavlovich in a five-round heavyweight co-main event. The UFC has not called that bout a title eliminator.

With Pavlovich ranked in the top three and Pereira a two-division champion, its winner will be hard to ignore when the Gane-Hokit champion looks for a challenger.

Bloody Elbow also notes a further complication: former champion Tom Aspinall, sidelined since his UFC 321 fight with Gane ended in a no-contest, could jump the queue if he is fit to face the Gane-Hokit winner in the first half of 2027.

That is reporting about a possibility, not a booking, and no Aspinall return date is announced.

So Volkov waits behind a title fight, a top-three clash, and a former champion's possible return. That is what "no man's land" actually looks like: not forgotten, just scheduled around.

What "We'll See" Means

Nothing in this story is a promise. No title shot for Volkov is stated as promised or booked, because none has been announced. No next fight for Volkov is announced either.

Volkov asked the question twice in one week and got two different answers: "he'll get his shot" before the fight, "we'll see" after it. The win did not change the answer. It only made the question harder to ignore.

At some point, the timing issue has to run out of timing. Until then, the heavyweight division's most patient contender keeps winning, keeps asking, and keeps waiting.
